Hiking Enchanted Rock Summit Trail | Texas

If you live in the United States, you’ve probably seen on the news lately that it has been HOT in some parts of the country. Texas has a reputation for being extra spicy in the summertime but it’s been a particularly warm June. So when we found ourselves in the Austin-area this week we decided to get up at dawn before temperatures hit the triple digits to hike at one of the most unique spots in Texas.

Enchanted Rock is a pink granite mountain located in Fredricksburg, Texas about 100 miles west of Austin. At 425 feet tall and covering 640 acres, it’s the largest pink granite rock…hill…mountain…whatever you want to call it…in the U.S.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area is part of the Texas State Park system and is super popular for camping and hiking. We had just enough time before work to hike the Summit Trail that takes you to the top of the dome but there are 11 miles of hiking trails within the park.

What you should know about Enchanted Rock Summit Trail:

Entrance Fee

$8 per person with a high volume of visitors on weekends so access could be limited (their site recommends making a reservation). Open year round from 6:30a.m to 10 p.m.If you can, go early in the morning on a weekday to avoid the crowds.

Distance

0.8 miles one way (1.6 miles total)

Difficulty

The trail map rates it as “challenging” but I would call it moderately difficult. No scrambling required.

Time

About 45 minutes to complete.

Pets

No dogs allowed on Summit Trail but they are allowed on the Loop Trail and camping/picnic areas of the park.

Water

Bring your own water. There is water fountain but it wasn’t working properly when we visited. 32 oz per person per hour is the recommended amount.

Connectivity

I use Verizon Wireless and I had zero cell reception at Enchanted Rock.

Shade

There is no shade. Wear sunscreen and a hat. Visit at dusk or dawn to beat the heat and for the most stunning views of the surrounding hill country!
